About the Programme
The Bachelor in Aviation is a degree programme at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. It is currently Norway’s only state-funded civilian pilot training programme. The flight school itself is called the University of Tromsø School of Aviation (UTSA), based in Bardufoss, around two hours’ drive from Tromsø. The first students began their training in 2008.
The programme lasts three years and takes place in both Tromsø and Bardufoss. Graduates receive a bachelor’s degree in aviation, a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL(A)) and the qualifications and experience needed to work as a pilot. These include single-engine piston (SEP), multi-engine (ME) and instrument (IR) ratings, an MCC course and a frozen ATPL (the theoretical examinations for the Airline Transport Pilot Licence). The ATPL theory is required for commercial pilots who later wish to obtain a full ATPL.

Istind Student Accommodation
Istind Student Accommodation provides student housing and facilities in Bardufoss. The building is located in Heggelia, approximately 5 km from UTSA’s hangar at Bardufoss Airport. Istind has student rooms, communal kitchens and shared spaces. Sideslip also runs a student bar and gym in the basement.
A grocery shop and petrol station are within easy walking distance. There is also a cinema, swimming pool, pizzeria and nightlife within a few kilometres. The surrounding Northern Norwegian landscape offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities. Just outside Bardufoss is Målselvfossen, Norway’s national waterfall. South of Heggelia are the twin peaks of Istindan, rising to almost 1,500 metres above sea level.
